SUMMARY:Vist to Rousham House\, Bicester
DESCRIPTION:We have been offered an exclusive opportunity to visit Rousham House and gardens\, which is about fifteen miles from Oxford. Rousham is one of the few houses that has been in the ownership of the same family since it was built\, in 1635 by Sir Robert Dormer. We will be given a guided tour of the house\, where we will see the wings and stable block added\, furnished\, and decorated by Kent\, as well as some of the 17th century panelling. The house has a collection of 18th century Chinese porcelain as well as Leeds ware\, Meissen\, Wemyss ware and Coalport. There is a variety of porcelain in every room. \nFollowing the tour of the house\, we will be free to explore the garden\, which is one of England’s most important gardens. Rousham represents the first phase of English Landscape design\, and remains almost as its designer William Kent left it. You can still see many of the features that delighted its 18th century visitors. There are also three 17th century walled gardens. In the park surrounding the gardens\, there is a herd of rare longhorn cattle. It has been said that ‘Kent is the great genius of eighteenth-century garden design and Rousham is his masterpiece\, one of the greatest gardens in the world’. \nRousham is uncommercial\, with no tea room or shop. Members are welcome to bring a picnic\, which can be enjoyed in the gardens after the guided tour. \nThe guided tour of the house will start at 11:30am. \n

SUMMARY:Visit to Shropshire
DESCRIPTION:We have organised a three day visit to Shropshire giving members an opportunity to visit a number of different collections. \nOn the afternoon of Tuesday 26th September\, we will be given a private tour of Weston Park with the curator. Weston Park is home to a world class collection of fine and decorative arts\, and is surrounded by Capability Brown designed gardens. There is also an important collection of Van Dyck portraits. \nThe next morning there will be a tour of the Coalport China Museum\, which has an extensive collection of Caughley. There will also be the opportunity to walk round the unusual shaped bottle kilns\, and to see the studio and bespoke shop of artisan glass maker Jonathan Harris.  This will be followed by a light lunch after which we will visit and have a tour of the Jackfield Tile Museum. We will see some of the most beautiful tiles including designs by famous artists such as Salvador Dali and William Morris. \nOn Thursday 28th September\, we will visit Blists Hill Victorian Town. Here we will be able to step back to a time and place where traditional life and industry sat side by side. We will visit Victorian shops and cottages and see craftspeople demonstrating their trades in the recreated working town. \nFinally\, in the afternoon\, we will visit the Darby Houses. These were the Ironmasters houses\, and consist of Rosehill\, built in 1738\, and Dale House\, built in 1717\, which both sit on the hillside overlooking Coalbrookdale. \nAccommodation and transport are not included but recommendations will be provided. \n \n

SUMMARY:Study Day - Tile Style: Ceramic art in two dimensions
DESCRIPTION:Our April study day will be looking at a wide range of tiles\, including delftware\, 19th century and Islamic and Spanish. \nThe earliest examples of tilemaking originated in the Holy Lands\, about the 4th century BC. From there\, the Romans brought tiling to Europe as they occupied lands. In the 8th and 9th centuries\, Uighur people of north west China developed what became the basis for 13th century Turkish and Middle Eastern tiles\, notable for their geometric symmetry and botanical motifs. \nThe study day will show how the art and techniques travelled from the Islamic world to Spain and Portugal and then on to Northern Europe. \nFurther development happened during the Industrial Revolution when tiles became more affordable. With the Victorian era\, the push for cleanliness and public health\, popularized tiles as a surface that could be cleaned and sanitized. This resulted in a wider use of tiles both in private homes and public places. \nWe are fortunate to have three acclaimed experts to talk to us about the history and development of Tiles. \nFrancesca Leoni\, Curator of Islamic Art at the Ashmolean Museum. \nAmber Turner\, Curator of Applied Art at Bristol Museum and Art Gallery. \nKate Cadman\, Collections curator at the Ironbridge Gorge Museum. DESCRIPTION:Oxford Ceramics Group member John Howard\, who is a BADA member and expert on antique English Pottery has kindly offered to give a talk and handling session on 18th century pottery at his shop in Woodstock. \n  His shop contains a substantial amount of early pottery and this visit will be a wonderful opportunity to see at close range a wide selection of interesting and unusual examples.  \n Due to limited space\, the group size is limited to 10\, but there will be two groups. SUMMARY:Visit to Buscot Park Near Faringdon
DESCRIPTION:We will be visiting Buscot Park\, the family home of Lord Faringdon\, who looks after the property on behalf of the National Trust. \nBuscot Park was built between 1780 and 1783\, and was greatly enlarged by Lord Faringdon’s great grandfather in the 1890’s. \nThe house is set within a large park of over 100 acres\, containing woodland\, lakes and formal Gardens as well as a large walled kitchen garden representing the four seasons. \nWe will be given a private guided tour with the curator and will be able to view the family collection of pictures\, furniture\, ceramics\, and objets d’art\, known as the Faringdon Collection which is displayed in the house. \nThis includes a wide range of ceramics ranging from Chinese\, Japanese and European porcelain to a good collection of Italian maiolica\, as well as a Wedgwood pink lustre tea service painted by Therese Lessore. \nThe extensive picture collection includes works by Rembrandt and Burne-Jones. \nThe collection includes contemporary paintings\, ceramics\, glass and silver that has been added to the collection by the present Lord Faringdon. \nMembers will also have an opportunity to see “Exhale”\, an outdoor exhibition of sculptures by contemporary glass artists. \n

SUMMARY:Visit to the University of Oxford Examinations School
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to announce a private visit to the University of Oxford Examinations School. \nIt is located on Oxford High Street\, and is a magnificent Jacobean Revival building designed by Sir Thomas Jackson (1835–1924)\, and is one of the largest buildings owned by the University. \n It retains its original beautiful architectural features from sweeping Italian marble staircases to ornate wooden carvings and original Victorian fireplaces.   \nOf particular interest to members are the beautiful tiled Aesthetic Movement chimneypieces that remain in many of the interiors\, including several decorated in the workshop of William De Morgan. \nNumerous portraits hang on the walls\, including a splendid portrait of Chichester Samuel Parkinson-Fortescue\, Baron Carlingford and 2nd Baron Clermont by James Tissot.

SUMMARY:Visit to Bristol
DESCRIPTION:On the afternoon of Monday 19th May\, we will visit Dyrham Park\, a National Trust property\, near Bristol. The house was created in the late 17th century by William Blathwayt (1649-1717).  He amassed one of the most important collections of Delft pottery in Britain\, including extravagant flower vases\, large plant tubs\, delicate fruit baskets and much more. \nDr Rachel Conroy\, Senior National Curator\, North and Decorative Arts\, National Trust\, will give an introductory talk and accompany the group on a self-guided tour of the house. \nThe next morning there will be a tour of the Bristol Museum and Art Gallery. The Museum is renowned for its ceramic collections including delftware\, Lund’s Bristol\, early Worcester porcelain\, “Champion’s Bristol” hard paste porcelain and an array of ceramics from China and Japan. \nWe will meet at 10.30am for coffee and biscuits\, when Kate Newnham\, Curator\, will meet us and give a guided tour. \nRoger Massey\, former President of the English Ceramic Circle\, and an expert on the collections will also be on hand to answer questions\, and Robin Hildyard will be showing members the unique Bristol Stoneware collection. \nIn the afternoon\, we will visit the Stradling Collection nearby\, which is a remarkable collection of 20thand 21st century design and applied arts with over 700 pieces of studio ceramics and 250 commercial examples. \nMembers may also like to visit the Georgian House Museum\, BS1 5RR\, with Georgian rooms c. 1790\, and the Red Lodge Museum\, BS1 5LJ\, which includes three of the oldest rooms in Bristol c. 1580.

SUMMARY:Visit to The Allen Gallery\, Alton
DESCRIPTION:Situated in the historic market town of Alton\, the Allen Gallery is an intimate setting for one of the south’s most outstanding collections of ceramics. The gallery hosts an impressive and varied selection of pottery\, porcelain and tiles dating from 1250 to the present day. \nThe gallery displays a wide range of ceramics\, from Wedgwood and English Delftware to unique studio pottery. Of the 3\,000 pieces currently on show\, the majority are drawn from around the UK\, but they sit alongside Eastern Asian and continental wares which have historically influenced the ceramics industry in this country. \nPieces by some of the best-known names in ceramics and sculpture can be seen\, including Items by Lucie Rie\, and the tin-glazed earthenware collection\, containing examples of English and European work\, is of international importance. The gallery is also home to a range of sculptures\, with a Parian ware bust of Queen Victoria and a bronze sculpture of a woman known as ‘Dolores’ by the American sculptor\, Jacob Epstein. \nMembers may also like to visit the Curtis Museum nearby which is home to one of the finest local history collections in Hampshire. \nAnother recommendation is a visit to Jane Austen’s house at Chawton\, (GU34 1SD)\, this year being the 200th anniversary of her death in 1825.  \nThis is where she wrote\, revised and published all six of her novels and where she lived for the last eight years of her life. SUMMARY:Study Day – “Porcelain in Staffordshire”
DESCRIPTION:The study day will tell us about the fascinating history of porcelain in Staffordshire from the mid 18th century\, and how  an abundance of local clays and coal gave rise to a concentration of pottery factories that made Staffordshire one of the foremost pottery centres in Europe. This history continues to the present day\, and reflects the social changes of times. \nWe are fortunate to have three acclaimed experts to talk to us about the history of porcelain in Staffordshire. \nMiranda Goodby\, Former Senior Curator of Ceramics at the Potteries Museums\, will talk about Longton Hall (1744-1760)\, and other soft paste porcelain. \nPat Preller\, the foremost authority on the subject\, will speak about New Hall (1781-1835)\, and other hard paste porcelains. \nJohn Democratis\, will talk about the emergence of bone China with particular reference to Spode\, founded in 1776. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Visit To Kelmscott Manor
DESCRIPTION:Kelmscott Manor was the summer home of designer William Morris from 1871 until his death in 1896. \nMorris drew great inspiration from the unspoilt authenticity of the house’s architecture and craftsmanship\, and its organic relationship with its setting\, especially its garden. \nThe internal décor today is substantially that of Morris\, and includes many of his famous textile patterns as well as much of his furniture \nFurther information will be provided as soon as the details have been finalised. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Visit to Longford Castle\, Salisbury
DESCRIPTION:Longford Castle is a Grade I listed country house on the banks of the River Avon south of Salisbury\, Wiltshire\, dating back to 1573. It is the seat of the Earl of Radnor and an example of the Elizabethan prodigy house. \nWe are fortunate to have been able to arrange a private guided tour of the house. \nWe will have the opportunity to view an important art collection which has been formed by successive generations of the family\, as well significant examples of 18th century English and continental furniture and delicate Oriental porcelain. \nWe will also get to chance to see renowned Brussels tapestries\, historical items such as Elizabeth I’s Jewel case\, and as well as contemporary art including modern sculptures by Laura Ford. \nFollowing the tour\, we will be able to look round the gardens\, which include a park\, fruit garden\, and kitchen garden. \nFurther information will be provided as soon as the details have been finalised.
